Welcome Rain: Part 3

The other day as I sat down to write, the sun was streaming in the window. Sinking lower toward the horizon as evening fades to night, I could see blue above the tree tops. But above our house lurked dark grey rain clouds, the rain falling softly. Sunshine and rain. Both are necessary for sustaining life.

Rain falls, washing away the dirt. It finds its way through the exterior to permeate the ground and get to the roots. This is where it makes a difference. I am reminded of the song “Grace like rain” that we used to sing in High School youth. In the middle of the storm, when things seem darkest, there is sweet relief in the grace of God that washes us and sustains us and gets down to the roots of who we are. We may be living under dark clouds. But he will use even this. To water our souls. To produce life. To provide opportunity for cleansing.

Light piercing through the clouds. It cannot be denied. No matter how dark the sky, the sun finds a way. It is the same with The Light. No matter how dark the sin, the Son found a way. He cannot be denied. His glory. His love. It will break through. It may feel like the night is coming, that the darkest part is not yet here. But there is one thing more certain than anything else. Morning is coming. The Light will come.

So when I hear the rain splatting on the windows, I hear it as a reminder that the rain makes the sun shine brighter. Indeed, I need to welcome the rain.

Oh may my heart have an open posture, willing to welcome it all. Both the rain and the light. Both the grace and the glory. The truth and the love. Come soon Lord, that we may see your full glory. A glory greater than even the sun breaking through the rain clouds.
